Bridgwater Baptist Church is a friendly group of people and you are assured a warm welcome.
Bridgwater Baptist Church has a long history, having been founded early in the 17th Century.
We base our faith and practice on the Bible and the teaching of Jesus Christ.
We practise believer’s baptism by immersion and communion is open to all.
We are linked to the South Western Baptist Association and the Baptist Union.
We also have links with mission workers in Nepal through BMS World Mission.
The Building’s History
The first chapel on this site was built in 1692 behind a row of cottages.
That chapel was demolished in 1837 to allow the building of a larger and more imposing structure.
The cottages were demolished in the 1850s.
Over the years there have been some additions, alterations and improvements, but the building is still very much used by various community groups as well as the church.
The large hall and the toilets have recently been refurbished and modernised, and there is also a good sized kitchen.
We have been working on an exciting initiative to restore and repurpose more of our premises which you can read about on the Energise Project page.
WHAT WE BELIEVE
BBC belongs to the Baptist Union of Great Britain (BUGB), and as such, we subscribe to the following three principles:
That our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, is the sole and absolute authority in all matters pertaining to faith and practice, as revealed in the Holy Scriptures, and that each Church has liberty, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, to interpret and administer His laws
That Christian Baptism is the immersion in water into the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, of those who have professed repentance towards God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ who 'died for our sins according to the Scriptures; was buried, and rose again the third day'
That it is the duty of every disciple to bear personal witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to take part in the evangelisation of the world
The three-part “Declaration of Principle” was introduced to enable people with widely different theological understandings to be in Christian community together. In CBC, you will find a variety of backgrounds and perspectives on the Christian faith, however, the ancient creed below is an example of what we would consider to be essential Christian belief:
The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
Amen
